I was expecting elegant, grand, deep… But instead it was a lot of shaky-cam and borderline camp. Maybe they blew their budget on the stars, and didn’t have any left for… well, the movie. It did have its moments, but there was so much more potential in the concept. I’m kind of glad I just happened to see this on a hotel TV for nothing, on a night when I had nothing better to do.

The Accused
Jodie Foster gets gang-raped. This movie got really good reviews, but I didn’t think that much of it. The way the story was presented reminded me of a made-for-TV movie. Sure, the subject matter was disturbing… but it didn’t really change my opinion of gang rape – um… it’s repulsive and wrong? Do I really need a movie to tell me that?
Contact
A very intelligent film that thoroughly examines the “what if we’re contacted by an extraterrestrial intelligence?” question. It also tackles a lot of philosophical questions that are rarely addressed in movies. Why can’t Hollywood make more movies like this?
A Very Long Engagement
A beautifully filmed piece of art, but unless you speak French, this was so hard to follow! Also, I felt a bit cheated by the ending. It’s a totally over-used cliche. I won’t say exactly what happens, because despite that major flaw, it’s still very much worth seeing just to “see”, in fact it may be worth seeing twice so you can “understand”.
Taxi Driver
Great movie that I finally saw. Interesting how timely it is, even though it was almost 30 years old when I first saw it. I guess there will always be directionless loners looking for something to believe in or fight for. After all, if you believe in nothing, what’s the point of anything?
The Silence of the Lambs
Hey, they’re making a sequel to this. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, but it should be interesting. It’s really hard to make a movie about a serial killer that doesn’t just turn into a silly slasher flick in the end. This is one of the few films which has managed to do it.
