St. Vincent

st-vincentThis was one of those movies that I wanted to hate, but couldn’t. Nearly all the characters are screwed-up people, yet they work somehow (Melissa McCarthy in particular had some good bits). By the end, I was right there with them singing the praises of St. Vincent (despicable as he was).

Also, I liked the plot twist where the main character has a stroke. This comes out of nowhere, and sends the movie in a different direction… but that’s exactly what such a thing does.

You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger

When did Woody Allen spit this one out? I can barely keep up with Woody Allen’s movies, and all I have to do is watch them… He has to actually make them. I frankly don’t know how he does this. Anyway, this one has all the usual hallmarks. It was just silly fun, that might actually make you think about things. Basically the movie follows a cast of characters who reverse roles as the movie progresses. At first, one has a life in chaos, and all the others are on the rise. By the end, that same one is doing well, and everyone else is in chaos. The fun part about it is that the stories are hardly cut-and-dry, and the plot is linear. You might think this is what’s going to happen, but it’s not really clear until the very end. It’s a rare movie that uses every frame to tell the story. This one does.

Tank Girl

I liked this movie. I’m not ashamed to admit either. I don’t think many people understood that it was supposed to have a “cartoonish” look to it. Most people just saw that as cheap and stupid. Of course, I am a much more advanced version of human, so I could fully understand and appreciate the artistic aspects of this fine piece of cinema. Sorry for all you dimwits out there, you’re missing out.

King Kong – 2005

Sure, it was beautifully filmed and all, but I found it really one-dimensional. A movie that’s 3 hours long should have more than one storyline. Plus, there was almost too much action. I realize the movie was an action/adventure movie at its heart, but it should know when enough is enough. The action sequences just went on and one and on… like the insect thing at the bottom of the canyon. The movie also tried to say a lot of things without dialog. This can be a good thing, and is certainly better than having too much dialog (a problem with many other movies), but I thought the balance was off. There also wasn’t a lot of attention paid to small details in the movie. I can’t really explain it, it’s just a feeling I had. Still, with all those reservations, it was pretty good, and worth seeing just for the eye-candy factor.
