While this was a fun romp, with lots of eye candy… I just couldn’t get past the giant hovering airship thing. The physics on that thing simply don’t add up. The amount of fuel & power you’d need to keep that think aloft would make it totally unmanageable. It’s totally fine to have gods from another planet surfing rainbows to earth. I can accept that, it’s movie fantasy. But, to claim that something like that airship can fly without magic or some kind of extraterrestrial anti-gravity gizmo is insulting.

Hitchcock
I got the impression someone was sitting in an office thinking, “You know, Anthony Hopkins could play a great Hitchcock”. And they were right – he did… Then, they really tried to build a movie around the idea. As window into another time and place, it was fun to watch. But, movies like this work better if they stand on their own. If the main character wasn’t Alfred Hitchcock, and this was just a movie about the struggles of a fictional director, it’d be completely forgettable. Anyway, I suppose I am glad they made it, and glad I watched it… kind of like stepping into a time machine and being a fly on a wall for a bit.
We Bought a Zoo
Yes. I watched this. But, only for the sweaters.
Though this is outwardly a cheerful family movie, I was a bit taken about how dark it was… I mean, they really dwelt on the loss of a parent – no gleaming over it. So, I have to give it a little credit for that. But, it’s still titled “We Bought a Zoo”… and you can probably guess the rest.
Scoop
Woody allen plays a fidgety neurotic wimp along side a glamorous young woman. Only Woody Allen can make the same old formula brand new with each iteration.
Lost in Translation
Ever been at a party at 2am, and you want to go home, but you’ve agreed to drive your friends home, and they’re engaged in some inane conversation and don’t want to leave? That’s what this movie was like for me… I just wasn’t having a good time. This got a bunch of good reviews, but for me… something was, um, lost in translation.
Girl with a Pearl Earring
A very interesting period movie inspired by a famous painting. I liked the way the story & characters were well balanced, and not cliche… what I mean is that every possible plot line is not brought to it’s most dramatic conclusion, and the characters are able to control their emotional (i.e. sexual) impulses. But, we’re still left with an engaging & passionate movie.
Ghost World
Have you ever seen those silly beer ads that end with the quote “true”, like the ad has shown something you’re nodding your head to? Screw those ads, this movie was “true”. Any film that features songs by the Buzzcocks and Skip James is just beyond true. I especially liked the ending… because nothing ever is truly resolved.
