Dome Peak

July 2002: A climb of Dome Peak

click to enlarge   This is a photo taken from our camp the first evening. Dome Peak is to the far right of the photo, elevation 8940ft. The summit to the center of this photo is called Spire Point.

click to enlarge   Sometime during the previous winter, an enormous avalanche wiped-out a swath of forest in the upper Bachelor Creek basin. The avalanche path was about a mile long and a couple hundred yards wide. It looked a lot like someone had put the forest in a blender and dumped it on the mountainside.

The nearest trailhead is about 14 miles from the summit, and much of the route is on a "trail" that hasn't been maintained in over 20 years - essentially making it a wilderness bushwhack.

Where is it?
Dome Peak is located along the cascade crest, due north of Glacier Peak... or south of Cascade Pass. The nearest trailhead is the Downey Creek trail. This trail is nice for about 6 miles.. until Bachelor Creek. The "trail" along Bachelor hasn't been maintained in 20 years (2002) - it's almost a bushwhack. Be prepared for some degree of frustration dealing with the tangle of underbrush.

Before you go...
You'll need a NW forest pass to park at the trailhead. Dome Peak is a tough 3 day trip - be prepared!
