May 2014 – Pueblo Mountains, Oregon
This bird made only a brief appearance along Little Cottonwood Creek. While this seemed an unusual place to find this bird… it’s similar to the Western Wood Pewee, but note the slightly white buffed area on the back. It would be easier to identify from the other side.

American Bittern
April 2014 – Fern Ridge Lake, Eugene, Oregon
A pair of American Bitterns flew overhead just for a moment… I managed to snap one quick shot.
Western Sandpiper
July 2013 – Fernhill Wetlands, Oregon
A Western Sandpiper pokes through the shallows at Fernhill.
Least Sandpiper
July 2013 – Fernhill Wetlands, Oregon
This might look a bit like the Western Sandpiper, but I have other photos in this series that show the distinctive yellow legs.
Chipping Sparrow
April 2013 – Mosier, Oregon
This Chipping Sparrow is perched in a Ponderosa Pine, just outside the town of Mosier, Oregon. It was singing its trademark and distinctive song – a simple high-pitched flutter, about 1-2 seconds long.
White-vented Myna
June 2013 – Singapore
These loud and vociferous birds are common throughout Singapore. They are similar to Starlings in many habits… though, they’re a bit larger, and I’m not sure if they flock to the same degree. Anyway, they seem a smart bird, that’s managed to handle the transition to modernity well.
Northern Pintail
March 2013 – Sauvie Island, Oregon
Ok, not the greatest shot of a Northern Pintail, but it’s a start… about a dozen of them were over on the lake at Wapato access area.
Chestnut-backed Antbird
February 2013 – Manuel Antonio National Park, Costa Rica
A few of these were foraging in the very dark and shady undergrowth just inland from the beach at Manuel Antonio National Park.
Rufous-collared Sparrow
February 2013 – Central highlands of Costa Rica
These birds appeared to be rather common in the high elevations of central Costa Rica… I saw them mostly in places that had been disturbed by human habitation… sort of like an exotic version of a House Sparrow.
Blue-gray Tanager
February 2013 – The Sloth Sanctuary, Costa Rica
These are fairly common birds, and can be attracted to feeders… which consist of bananas or plantains split open and left for the birds to pick at.
