February 2013 – Monteverde, Costa Rica
At least two of these were hanging out near the entrance of a reserve that borders Monteverde. The other one had a really beat-up tail – not sure how that happened. This one was in a little better shape.

It’s interesting to pick out the different Hummingbirds. They’re often very similar, yet all certainly identifiable. It would be quite a job to be the first one to figure this all out.
February 2013 – Monteverde, Costa Rica
Another of the myriad of hummingbirds swarming the feeder near the entrance to Monteverde reserve.
February 2013 – Monteverde, Costa Rica
The scene at the hummingbird feeder at the entrance near Monteverde was chaotic. Most of the hummingbirds took just short breaks on the branches nearby.
February 2013 – Monteverde, Costa Rica
This bird randomly landed in a tree next to us… like it’d dropped from outer space and was a bit disoriented. It’s a pretty big bird, and due to the combination of my long lens, and all the tree branches in the way, all I could manage was a clear head-shot. But, it’s got a pretty neat head, so what the heck.
February 2013 – Monteverde, Costa Rica
Hummingbirds are common in this area… There is a very popular group of feeders near the entrance, but this one was getting some natural nourishment from a flower along a trail.
February 2013, Santa Elena, Costa Rica
There are a few birds that all have this same general appearance, and it can be a challenge to figure out which is which… but I think I have this one right.
March 2013 – Hillsboro, Oregon
A pair of Bald Eagles likes this perch near my home. It’s the tip of the highest tree around (which in this area is pretty darn high), with a view to a nearby pond.
September 2012 – Hood Canal, Washington
Bald Eagles are fairly common all over Puget Sound, and on Hood Canal as well… but, they’re still striking to see. This young bird was fairly unconcerned as I walked right underneath. I actually had to back up to get the entire bird in the frame. This was taken near the mouth of the Hamma Hamma River, where it pours into Hood Canal.
January 2013 – Hillsboro, Oregon
At a quick glance, these birds can pass for an American Goldfinch in winter plumage. But, the olive back is a good indicator.
January 2013 – Hillsboro, OR
More Dark-eyed Juncos on a branch… Ok, maybe time to “branch out” from this setup…
December 2012 – Hillsboro, OR
These are common backyard visitors… visiting the back yard. I took this image and the one below trying out a new camera trap – an automatic trigger when the bird lands on the branch. Still have to work out the bugs on this, but it shows promise.
