November 2015 – Hyde Park, London
This birds are a lot more striking in breeding season. This one was settling down for a long winter.

May 2014 – Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Oregon
Finally, a much improved photo of a Clark’s Grebe. This one was floating with a few of its brothers (other Clarks Grebes) and cousins (Western Grebes) in a lake in the Malheur Wetlands.
May 2012 – Klamath Basin
I had seen dozens of Western Grebes on this day, but only spotted one Clark’s Grebe… he’s the one in the middle of these two Western Grebes, trying to blend in. It’s not the best picture, but it’s the best I have for now.
July 2012 – Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, Washington
Not the most exciting image, but with much better light this time!
June 2012 – Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, Washington
This Pied-billed Grebe had some fledgling chicks floating nearby…
May 2012 – Lower Klamath Lake, California
I only saw this bird for an instant before he blended back into the reeds. It’s interesting how some birds get along being extremely flashy and colorful… and others just aren’t. Anyway, I hope to get a better photo of one of these at some point.
May 2012 – Lower Klamath Lake
A pair of Western Grebes were swimming in one of the maze of channels in Lower Klamath Lake. Funny that these birds dive when startled, but they can only stay down for a short while, and it seems they’re not good with directions under water – half the time, they resurface not much further from where they went under.
May 2012 – Tule Lake, California
Funny, I hadn’t ever even considered the reality of the Eared Grebe until I saw them at Tule Lake on this day. These were floating around along with a menagerie of other similar acquatic bretheren. Pretty bird, I hope to get some better photos in the future!
