Harpers Ferry is at the northeast tip of West Virginia, where the Shenandoah and Potomic Rivers meet. It's a historical crossroads - even today as the AT goes right through town.
At Great Falls, the Potomac River builds up speed and force as it falls over a series of steep, jagged rocks and flows through the narrow Mather Gorge... or so says the National Park Service. There are a bunch of trails to explore along the banks of the river.
