Krafla
The volcano Krafla erupted in the mid 1980s, and the area around it is a literal hotbed of activity. A nearby geothermal plant siphons-off some of the heat, but for some reason, they had let these otherwise-capped fumeroles vent on this morning. The sound was like that of a jet engine, and could be heard for miles away (even from our camp the previous evening). Nearby, a series of colorful steaming mud pools and a sparkling blue lake provided additional evidence of the turmoil beneath our feet.
