Lava
We quickly became familiar with the difficulty posed by endless fields of jumbled lava flows. The area around Krafla was particularly inundated with flow after successive flow. The most recent flows from the 1980s were still steaming, but although the slightly older flows we had to walk over were cool, they were hardly easy to negotiate. Luckily, there was a marked "way" from the volcano down to the town 8 miles below. But there was little actual trail - just a route through the maze that someone had marked with yellow posts.
