Grit
It was everywhere - finely ground pumice-sand. When it was dry, it blew in our faces, and when it was wet, it stuck to everything it touched. Dry or wet, it got into our shoes so quickly and regularly, we resigned ourselves to walking on what amounted to sandpaper. Every now and then, we'd stop to empty a particularly troubling pebble, but it was only temporary relief. This is a photo of my shoe at the end of a long day. I'm not sure why I didn't bring ankle gaiters (I usually do on such hikes), but it was a decision I seriously regretted.
