Trolls
The lore of Iceland is rich with trolls and elves. Trolls are supposed to be turned to stone upon contact with sunlight. It was not surprising that many of the more striking vertical lava formations were said to be unlucky trolls. We often would describe the land ahead in terms like, "I think the path goes right around those trolls up there...".
