The Malheur National Wildlife refuge is located in south eastern Oregon, south of the town of Burns, and northwest of the Steens Mountains.
There are few services in the area. Be sure that you have enough gas, food and water if travelling on some of the more remote roads. Though, you can get all 3 just down the road from the MNWF headquarters. It's a good idea to call ahead for road conditions... and bird conditions if that's your thing!

The Kiger Mustangs of eastern Oregon are wild horses that possess many of the characteristics of the original Spanish Mustang. It's thought these horses are more closely related to their 1600s ancestors. The BLM manages the 37,000 acre Kiger Herd Management Area (plus an additional 29,000 acres in a nearby location) to preserve this unique Oregon resident.
Leslie Gulch is located in far eastern Oregon, just east of the Owyhee Reservoir. A well graded road travels the length of the bottom of Leslie Gulch..
There is only one campground in Leslie Gulch, available on a first-come first-serve basis. Conditions of the road and weather can vary quite a bit. Heavy rain can lead to flash-flooding and mud. Extreme heat can be unpleasant or dangerous, prepare accordingly!

Hells Canyon is the massive gorge created by the Snake River as it carves through the mountains along the border of Oregon, Idaho and Washington. It is the deepest such canyon in the United States (yes, deeper than the Grand Canyon), when measured from the tallest point to the bottom.
This is a harsh place. Most of the year, it's either too hot and dry, or too cold for a pleasant backpacking trip. The late spring is a great time to visit. Floating down the Snake River in a raft is probably the best option in the height of the summer. But any way you get there, it's a long way from population centers.
