Strawberry Mountain is located in Eastern Oregon, just southeast of the town of John Day. It's nearly a 6hr drive from Portland. This is like an alpine island in the sky... A truly unique oasis.

The Kiger Mustangs of eastern Oregon are wild horses that possess many of the characteristics of the original Spanish Mustang. It's thought these horses are more closely related to their 1600s ancestors. The BLM manages the 37,000 acre Kiger Herd Management Area (plus an additional 29,000 acres in a nearby location) to preserve this unique Oregon resident.

The Pueblo Mountains are a small range of peaks in far southern Oregon, just north of the Nevada border. This place is wild - there are no established trails - and can be harsh in the summer and winter. But with the right season and conditions, it's a wonderful place to explore.

There is only one campground in Leslie Gulch, available on a first-come first-serve basis. Conditions of the road and weather can vary quite a bit. Heavy rain can lead to flash-flooding and mud. Extreme heat can be unpleasant or dangerous, prepare accordingly!

Steens Mountain is an uplift in the far southeastern Oregon desert. A gentle rise on the western flanks goes up to over 9000ft... the sharp drop on the eastern side gives way to the dry Alvord desert.

The Deschutes River flows north along the eastern flanks of the Cascade Range in Oregon. It's the major drainage for the eastern slope of the Oregon Cascades.

Newberry Crater is an extinct volcano in central Oregon, about an hour's drive south of Bend, OR. The are a number of volcanic features in the area - lava tube caves, volcanic rock flows... and a couple lakes in the center of the crater.

Hells Canyon is the massive gorge created by the Snake River as it carves through the mountains along the border of Oregon, Idaho and Washington. It is the deepest such canyon in the United States (yes, deeper than the Grand Canyon), when measured from the tallest point to the bottom.

Floating down the Snake River in a raft is probably the best option in the height of the summer. But any way you get there, it's a long way from population centers.

Smith Rock State Park is located about 6 miles north of Redmond, OR. From the community of Terrebone along hwy 97, follow the signs east.

Balancing Rock is a small area near Lake Billy Chinook, where larger hard volcanic boulders rest atop softer rock that is eroding underneath. This is not a large area - just one hillside in a vast forest.
