From Portland southward, the Willamette Valley is the heart of western Oregon. This fertile valley between the coast range and the Cascades is home to most of the states population, and many points of interest.
The Columbia River carves a canyon through the Cascade Mountains. The eastern portion is arid, the western portion wet. Steep cliffs rise to the north and south. This is a truly unique and beautiful place.

Sauvie Island is a large island in the Columbia River, about 20 miles downstream from Portland, Oregon. The island is about half farmland, and half wetlands that comprise a protected wildlife area. There are numerous places to get out an explore.
The Portland Japanese Garden has matured over the course of 50-plus years into a world-class treasure. The garden is also a hub of cultural education - like a slice of Japan on the other side of the Pacific.
