That's just my own name for the high cloud forests along the Pan-American Highway through the center of Costa Rica. This area really contains a lot of prime habitat for birds like the signature species - the Resplendent Quetzal. Before human encroachment, there was a lot more such habitat... but at least Costa Rica has made an effort to preserve what they have.

The Monteverde area is located in the mountainous northwest of Costa Rica. This rich cloud forest reserve was started by a group of Quakers who were alarmed at the rapid deforestation of the area. A number of smaller reserves connect to the main reserve, providing a decent-sized habitat for a large number of plants and animals.

The Osa Peninsula is located on the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. This is one of the more wild places remaining in Costa Rica, home to a myriad of wildlife, and large tracts of primary forest. Much of the peninsula is designated as Corcovado National Park. Around the park, there are a mix of smaller private reserves, ranches and farms. This is a place that still looks like much of Central America once did.

Cahuita is a small town, bordered by a like-named national park on the easy-going Carribean shore of Costa Rica.

The Sloth Sanctuary is just what you think it is - a home for sloths who can't survive in the wild, and a rehabilitation facility for injured sloths who can be re-introduced to the wild. It's located about 30 minutes south of Limón, Costa Rica.

Coffee is grown throughout much of central Costa Rica... but this gallery concentrates on the coffee-growing regions around Orosi and Cartago - just south of the capital San Jose.

Volcán Irazú is an 11,260ft volcano to the south of Costa Rica's capital, San Jose. This is a very accessible volcano, with a good road to the very top, where a short trail leads to a view over the rim.
